As probably you know by now, in Bern, the Jazz Police have long left the building.
Whilst we deeply respect our roots and still impress the importance of solid fundamentals and knowing our history, instead we focus on what’s current – forging meaningful collaborations with our colleagues in Neue Musik and Sound Arts, promoting local, national and international exchange, and looking for unique performance opportunities with our friends in Musikvermittlung.
Our teachers are some of the world’s finest active practitioners, and our size allows for uniquely dedicated and tailored study. Add the advantage of extensive recording and practice facilities, top-level masterclasses, intensive pop-up festivals and an increasingly strong emphasis on new classical music, electronics and our own European Jazz and Improvised Music tradition, and I think it’s easy to see why Bern is ever-more the place to be.

Dass bei uns in Bern die Jazzpolizei schon seit einiger Zeit das Haus verlassen hat, ist allseits bekannt.
Während wir unsere Traditionen respektieren und grossen Wert auf die Vermittlung solider historischer Grundlagen legen, steht an der HKB die Aktualität im Vordergrund. Davon zeugen bedeutende Kooperationen mit unseren KollegInnen in der Neuen Musik und Sound Arts, die Förderung des lokalen, nationalen und internationalen Austauschs und die Suche nach einzigartigen Auftrittsmöglichkeiten mit unseren Freunden in der Musikvermittlung.
Unter unseren Dozierenden sind einige der besten aktiven Jazz-MusikerInnen dieser Welt und unsere Organisation erlaubt den Studierenden ein engagiertes und massgeschneidertes Studium. Zudem können wir umfassende Aufnahme- und Übemöglichkeiten, Masterclasses auf höchster Ebene und spannende Pop-up Festivals anbieten. Ein wachsendes Schwergewicht liegt auf neuer klassischer und elektronischer Musik sowie unserer eigenen europäischen Tradition im Jazz und improvisierter Musik. Es ist also einfach einzusehen, warum die Jazzausbildung in Bern immer beliebter wird: Es ist eine Ausbildung in «Jazz and Contemporary Music» für das 21. Jahrhundert.

Jazz Studies in Bern
The Jazz and Contemporary Music Department of the Bern University of the Arts (one of the leading Swiss art academies) began life as the «Swiss Jazz School» in 1967. The «Swiss Jazz School» was the first autonomous jazz school in Europe.
Our three-year Bachelor of Music programme is followed by a two-year Masters, and this allows our musicians to develop a range of individual profiles, whilst qualifying them to practice in three distinct areas: Composition, Performance or Pedagogy.
The HKB Jazz and Contemporary Music Department is a member of the DKSJ (the association of the directors of Swiss Jazz Schools).
Jazz studieren in Bern
Bereits 1967 wurde unter dem Namen «Swiss Jazz School» die erste autonome Jazzschule Europas gegründet mit dem Angebot eines kontinuierlichen Jazzunterrichtes. Mittlerweile gehört die traditionsreiche Abteilung zum Fachbereich Musik an der Hochschule der Künste Bern, einer der führenden grossen Kunsthochschule der Schweiz.
Nach dem dreijährigen Grundstudium Bachelor of Arts in Musik schliessen die Masterstudiengänge an, die zur Berufsbefähigung führen. Die Vertiefungen in Komposition, Performance oder Pädagogik bieten viel Auswahl und ermöglichen eine breite Palette an individuellen Profilen.
Der Studienbereich Jazz ist Mitglied der Direktorenkonferenz Schweizer Jazzschulen DKSJ.
